Learning French to Quick and Effective Way

by David Yoshikawa

You have multiple ways to learn a new language at your disposal. Everyone responds to different methods and tools in different ways. Listening to audio courses may be what you react to best when it comes to learning a language. On the other hand, you may be the type of person that can teach yourself from a book rather than relying on an instructor. There is no one way for learning a language. This is actually a good thing because once you identify your learning style you can choose the technique that works best. However, with so many choices it can become overwhelming when choosing one. Stick with me here, you will realize how simple this really is. Below you will learn some useful tips.

Flashcards are very powerful. Most people trying to learn a new language write off flashcards because they are low-tech. So, why use flashcards when you have computers and audio courses? The short and honest answer is because they work! Remember in grade school how effective flashcards were in helping you study for that quiz? You can take them anywhere you want. Another positive attribute of flashcards is that you can practice with a friend, your children, or a significant other without them having any knowledge of your new language. When it is all said and done, flashcards have passed the test time and again as one of the best tools available for a new language learner.

Learn to feel comfortable with feeling uncomfortable. When you start taking classes to learn a new language it is a good idea to remind yourself that everybody else there is in the same position that you are in. Nobody is going to laugh at you for mispronouncing something or using the wrong verb tense.

Your classmates are beginners too! One of the biggest hindrances to the learning process is feeling self conscious and not letting yourself make mistakes because you are afraid of feeling silly. When you take a beginners class in French, everybody else there is new to the language as well. Let yourself make mistakes or say things strangely. You’ll have an easier time of learning and so will everybody else!

Perhaps there's a French speaking neighborhood close to where you live? Yes? Great, then start going there often.

This is a great way to immerse yourself in the language and to learn French while still having an easy out to your comfort zone. These neighborhoods are great because the people in them use French the way it would be used in a country where French is the main language. There is a large difference between the language you will learn in a textbook and the language you will use if you try to use it with fluent speakers. Learning to speak in less formal settings will help you feel more at home if you are going to travel to a French speaking country. Learning a new language does not have to be difficult. There are so many hints and tricks that you can use to make the process easier on yourself! The trick is to find the method that works best for you and, frankly, that can take some time. Many people have to try a few different learning techniques before they find the method that truly helps them learn. Don't get discouraged if you are one of these people. Sooner or later your lessons will sink in and you might even find yourself fluent in French!
